Hair loss doesn’t just afflict men. Female pattern baldness (terrifying, isn’t it?!) can also lead to hair loss and scalp showing in women too. While it’s rarely spoken about, it is quite common, and chances are a friend of yours is suffering from it too.
You may have freaked out when you look at your clogged shower hole or squealed in shock when you notice excess hair in your hair brush, but rest assured, hair loss is normal for many women, and there are things you can do to stop it. But, firstly, let’s look at the causes:
Diet:
It goes without saying that diet affects our hair. Hair is furthest away from our heart, so nutrients feed our muscle, organs, and skin, before reaching the not-so-vital hair on our head. If our diet is suffering then we may notice more hair fall than normal. Our hair may become weak and brittle, and may snap off.
Conditions such as anaemia may also impact the condition of our hair. Low levels of iron may result in excessive hair loss and we may see more hair mottled in our hair brush as a result. If this is the case, get a blood test to rule out any vitamin and mineral deficiencies or any issues with your thyroid. Consider upping your iron intake, and take a multi-vitamin that contains biotin, selenium and vitamin C.
A Dirty Scalp:
Clogged hair follicles can limit hair growth. If you’re suffering from dandruff, dry scalp or an infection, your hair may suffer.
If this is the case, ensure that you wash your hair twice, massaging the shampoo into the scalp. Shampoos that contain SLS, parabens and other nasties can cause clogging, resulting in excessive hair fall. Switch to natural versions that can contribute to the overall health of your hair and scalp.
Medication:
Certain medications can cause hair loss. Some women notice greater hair loss when taking oral contraceptives, while others are afflicted when taking medication for hypertension and anxiety. This can be quite disconcerting for many, and it’s always a good idea to speak to your GP if you notice an adverse impact on your hair health. They may be able to switch you onto another medication that doesn’t have this side effect. If this is the case, always consult a doctor though.
DHT:
One of the reasons why balding hair is so common in men is because of the hormone, testosterone. An increase in testosterone can result in hair loss. Testosterone is present in female bodies too, but at a much lower level. The issue is that the consequences on hair follicles can be similar. If this is the case, consider using a shampoo that blocks DHT at a follicular level.
Heat and Styling:
Over-processed hair is prone to damage and breaking. Excess bleaching and heating can dry out the hair, resulting in brittle and weak ends. If this is happening to you, using a serum or mask to restore health to hair is imperative.
Refrain from heat styling where possible and when drying hair, always use a heat protection mist. Aim to dry hair until it is bone dry before a quick blast with the hair dryer.
Genetics:
If there is a family history of hair loss, then you may be more susceptible yourself. Fret not, my lovelies, as there are many things that you can do to prevent this from happening.
Start by protecting the hair that you do have, while also nourishing the hair follicles.
